What you can do today

Four applications on mature European services, each with its access conditions: some data is open and directly usable, and some services are institutional, where the path is to work for the agency that receives them.

Radar spill detection

CleanSeaNet (EMSA) detects possible oil spills and vessels with SAR radar, day and night, regardless of clouds, and alerts coastal states in near real time. It is a service for administrations: our role is to integrate it, or to build in-house detection on Sentinel-1.

Drift forecasting

Lagrangian models fed with Copernicus Marine currents predict the paths of objects, people, and pollutants. CLS operates a drift scenario interface for search and rescue and pollution response.

Spain's general interest ports move more than 540 million metric tons a year, and every operation goes through a maneuvering window: sea state decides when ships enter, load, and leave.

Vessels and possible spills seen by radar, at night and through clouds

Sentinel-1 carries a radar (a SAR, which makes its own illumination and works at night and under any sky) that returns an image of the sea where ships stand out as bright dots and an oil patch shows up as an unusually smooth area. The system processes each pass, marks the detections, and cross-checks them against the ships' AIS signals. The result is an alert of what is on your water and what does not fit.

The window to enter, load, and leave

Copernicus Marine publishes ten-day forecasts of waves, currents, and wind for the Mediterranean and the Iberian Atlantic. The system translates that forecast into the wave height and current your operation can handle at each point, and marks the green hours on the calendar. You know in advance when there is a maneuvering window and when it is better to wait.

Where a drifting object is heading

When something goes into the water (a person, a buoy, a slick), what sets its course is the currents and wind of the next few hours. The system starts from the last known point and simulates thousands of possible paths with Copernicus Marine currents, drawing the most likely search area. The response concentrates where it truly is, instead of combing the whole sea.
