Fire danger and burned areas

EFFIS publishes daily fire danger and burned-area perimeters for 43 countries, with public map services under a CC BY 4.0 license. It plugs directly into your viewer or your decision support system.

Emergency mapping

When fire strikes, the Copernicus Emergency Management Service produces downloadable activation maps. In July 2026 it was activated for a wildfire in Andalusia (EMSR892). Activation is restricted; the products are open.

Forest inventory and change

Sentinel-1 and 2, the Copernicus tree-cover layers, the Spanish Forest Map at 1:25,000, and the national LiDAR survey (5+ points/m²) support remote inventory, change alerts, and dynamic fuel maps.

Traceability and insurable risk

The EUDR regulation requires due diligence on deforestation, which Earth observation can verify. EUSPA also documents parametric forest insurance in operation, such as the AXA Climate case.

The EFFIS annual series shows why forests call for continuous monitoring: the record year arrives all at once, and satellites are the first to measure it.

How we put it to work

The public forest data exists. What is usually missing is the system that combines it with your own forests and turns it into alerts: which stands to watch, when to act on fuel, and what to document for due diligence. That system is what we build, on the same constellations and pipelines we use in every other sector:

A fuel map that updates on its own

Every new Sentinel-2 pass recomputes plant vigor and moisture with two indices, NDVI and NDMI, that measure how much green leaf there is and how much water it holds. The system turns those values into a fuel risk map by stand and refreshes it on its own. You know which areas are driest this week before the heat arrives.

A stress alert before you can see it on the ground

When a stand loses vigor in an unusual way, the vegetation index drops weeks before you can catch it from the track. The system compares each stand with its own history and with neighboring stands, and flags the drops that fall outside the normal range. You get a located alert to go check for pests, drought, or decline where it really matters.

Deforestation check for the EUDR

The EUDR regulation asks you to show that a plot has not been deforested after December 2020. For each polygon, the system runs through the Sentinel-2 image series and the Sentinel-1 radar, which sees day and night even through clouds, and confirms that the tree cover holds. The output is a file with the geotagged point, the dates, and the images that back your due diligence.
